Fun Dives for Certified Divers

Fun Diving in Koh Tao

“We’re all about keeping groups small, making new friends and diving safe”

Fun Diving at Tech Diving Thailand Dive is all about getting the maximum enjoyment from your dives. To ensure this, we keep groups sizes to a maximum of 4 divers. We’ll also buddy your team based on certification level/ dive experience and comfort in the water.

We provide a dive leader from our full-time professional team to ensure fun dives are carried out with the highest of safety standards. Equipment is included in the cost, however, if you have your own gear we will happily discount your dives.

Dive site selection is realistic and always safety-conscious. We consult with our local Thai Captain on water movement and site conditions every day and only set dive sites 1 day in advance.

We promise to take you to various dive sites as much as possible and for those divers that book on for multiple dives, we will try our best to make sure you dive with your chosen professional throughout your stay.

Should you have any specific dive sites of interest, please let our team know so we can do our best to get you there!

Please note, it is recommended that you do not fly within 18-24 hours after diving!

Variety of Dive Sites on Koh Tao

koh-nang-yuan-dive-site-in-koh-tao

Koh Tao offers various dive sites. Most of the diving sites are located around the famous Koh Nang Yuan island, thus within close range from the Diving center. Japanese garden dive site, located on one side of Koh Nang Yuan island, is an easy dive, 15m deep, with beach access and massive diversity in marine life. The Twins Pinnacle dive site is on the other side of Koh Nang Yuan island, between 5m and 20m deep. It is the most popular dive site, protected by the island. Twins Pinnacle dive site offers the best diving conditions.

Wreck diving is the very definition of adventure. The HTMS Sattakut is a WW2 Wreck between 18 and 30 meters deep and is another very accessible dive site from Koh Tao island. You should consider visiting this Wreck!

Wreck HTMS Sattakut has become the most popular wreck in the Gulf of Thailand due to its depth, ideal for recreational divers, as it is perfect for fun divers or for those who want to start their Advanced Adventurer course.

Located in Koh Tao, just in front of Sairee Beach, this shipwreck has a very interesting history.

It was built on January 30, 1944 at The Commercial Iron Works, Portland – Oregon, USA.  Its first name was USS LCI (M) -739)

On February 27, 1944 it was launched and commissioned in the U.S. Navy for use in landing craft infantry, participating in the following campaigns:

  • Operation Western Caroline Islands:Capture and occupation of the southern Palau Islands, September 6-October 14, 1944.
  • Operation Iwo Jima: Assault and occupation of Iwo Jima, Japan, 19 February to 3 March 1945.
  • Operation Okinawa Gunto: Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, Japan, March 26-June 14, 1945

Received 3 U.S. Battle Stars for its service in World War II.

After the World War II

It was commissioned into the Thai Navy as HTMS Sattakut in 1946 where it served until it was decommissioned in 2007.

On June 18, 2011, at 16:00hs after cleaning and removing hazardous materials from the ship, Thailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources sank the ship off the coast of Koh Tao with the idea of forming a new artificial reef and a new dive site.

This initial sinking did not go as planned, resulting in the wreck lying on its side in the sand, as opposed to the preferred upright position.

At the beginning of August 2011, a salvage team successfully righted and moved the wreck to its current resting place, about 40 meters south of the Hin Pee Wee dive site.

Diving at the HTMS Sattakut

Diving at this shipwreck is a must if you visit Koh Tao Island and you are a scuba diver.

Here are some pictures of our dives at the HTMS Sattakut.

By the way, if you do go diving on any shipwrecks around Koh Tao, they are all artificial reefs and donated by the Thai Royal Navy and so you can’t touch or remove anything!

HTMS 312 and HTMS 313 are the names of two ships that were sunk on Koh Tao, Thailand in 2023 to create new dive sites:
  • HTMS Hanhaksattru 312Sunk on September 8, 2023 at Ao Mao Bay
  • HTMS Suphairin 313Sunk on September 7, 2023
The Thai Navy intentionally sank the ships to create new dive sites for the island. The addition of new wrecks reduces the impact on existing sites and increases the number of wreck dive spots on Koh Tao.

Chumphon Pinnacle is a fantastic dive site between Koh Tao and Chumpon, from 15m to 40m deep. Chumphon Pinnacle offers all the diversity of Thailand's marine life, including Wale Sharks, if you are lucky.

How difficult is Scuba Diving on Koh Tao?

Thailand scuba diving is generally not considered challenging. Koh Tao has the most accessible conditions of all Thailand diving destinations. Koh Tao dive sites are not subject to strong currents, thermoclines, or any sudden changes in water temperature or visibility. Thus diving on Koh Tao is very accessible, whatever your diving experience.

How Safe is diving on Koh Tao?

Koh Tao has world-class emergency response and rescue teams, and while not used regularly, this is an essential part of safety planning. There is also a recompression chamber located less than 2 hours away – much closer than you'll find at other popular diving destinations in Thailand and worldwide.

Koh Tao offers the highest standards regarding diver safety and diver training. The island certifies over 80,000 divers yearly across the many different Diving courses on Koh Tao. Safety measures are in place and followed. NAUI is a non-profit organistaion unlike NAUI and so is ProTec and we have an active presence on the island. Our ProTec 5 Star Dive Center is regularly visited by regional managers for evaluations and to keep us up to date with the latest training standards and developments.

How to go to Koh Tao?

There are many different ways to get to Koh Tao. If you have time and are on a budget, you can get a Lomprayah overnight bus from Bangkok to Chumphon and a high-speed Catamaran to Koh Tao, which takes two hours.

https://www.lomprayah.com/

If you are short of time, there are two flight routes. First, you can fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui or from Bangkok to Surat Thani. Both with a short boat journey across. If you prefer to avoid the bus rides, you can take an overnight train with a similar route.

The underwater scenery is awe-inspiring, with coral-encrusted rocky pinnacles, bustling reefs, and stunning shipwrecks.

Diving in Koh Tao is exceptionally relaxing and enjoyable. Koh Tao has the most accessible conditions of all Thailand diving destinations. Those easy conditions make it perfect for learning scuba diving, including additional specialities like Wreck divingDeep diving, or Nitrox.
